Every Heart a Doorway

Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children #1)

Every Heart a Doorway  by Seanan McGuire   Fairy Tale/Fantasy/LGBTQ+

(from Amazon)  Children have always disappeared under the right conditions - slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.  Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her newfound schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost.

(My Review)

Nancy returns from disappearing into the Underworld.  She desperately wants to return, but does not want to return.  She is not the same person, so her parents send her to a special school to be with other children who have been through what she has experienced.  Once there, she starts to learn about this magical thing that happened to her, but also, mysterious tragedies start to occur.  She and her new friends seek to uncover the truth.  I found this a charming little book/novella.  It looked at feelings of not belonging, finding out who you are, accepting who you are, and finding people who accept you.
